Contradicting claims made by Iran, President Donald Trump said that the Islamic Republic has agreed to high-level nuclear inspections.
His assertions come after Iranian state media purported that Iran’s spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Esmaeil Baghaei, claimed that Iran had not accepted any new nuclear-related commitments.
“Despite their protestations and false statements to the contrary, coupled with the drumbeat of the Fake News, which is doing everything possible to make the U.S. Victory as small and insignificant as possible, Iran has fully and completely agreed to highest level Nuclear inspections long into the future (Infinity!!!),” Trump said in a Tuesday Truth Social post.
“This will [ensure] ‘Nuclear Honesty.’ If they did not agree to this, there would be no further negotiations!” he continued.
Talks between the U.S. and Iran kicked off on Sunday in Switzerland after a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed last week by both countries, which provided for a 60-day period to work out a final agreement.
Vice President JD Vance, who led the U.S. delegation, said on Monday that Iran had agreed to allow International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors into the country, which he declared as a “major milestone for the American people.”
Trump on Tuesday further emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz remained open, despite claims over the weekend that Iran had closed it due to the conflict in Lebanon.
“Based on this and other major concessions being made by Iran, I have agreed to allow the Hormuz Strait to remain OPEN, with no further Naval Blockade. However, all ships are remaining in place should it be necessary to reinstitute the Blockade, which seems, at this point, highly unlikely,” the U.S. president said.
He went on to address the unfreezing of Iranian assets, as well as the removal of sanctions on the Islamic Republic, purporting that such funds would be used to buy U.S. goods.
“The Money and/or Sanctions that the U.S. Treasury is releasing goes into escrow, controlled by the U.S.A., and will be used for the purchase of food and medical supplies, exclusively from the United States, including Corn, Wheat, and Soybeans from our great American Farmers,” he added, noting the need for relief in the country.
“These are things that are desperately needed by Iran. This is a humanitarian crisis, and I feel it is necessary to help, NOW, before it is too late. Talks are going well!” he continued.
An Iranian envoy on Tuesday, however, claimed that Iran would decide how such assets unfrozen through the deal would be used, not the U.S., denying the assertion they would be used to buy U.S. goods, according to Reuters.
Vance, who left Switzerland on Monday, said technical talks to establish a final deal would continue, claiming that progress had been made in the negotiations, notably with four key accomplishments: establishing a mechanism to keep the Strait of Hormuz permanently open, building a mechanism for the deconfliction of the regional ceasefire, the agreement for the inspection of Iranian nuclear sites, and setting up the process for the continued technical talks.
