President John Dramani Mahama has congratulated Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his re-election, expressing his commitment to strengthening bilateral relations between Ghana and Brazil and advancing the interests of countries in the Global South.
In a Facebook post, President Mahama described Lula’s victory as well-deserved and expressed optimism about deepening cooperation between the two countries, which share longstanding historical ties.
“Congratulations to President Luiz Lula da Silva on your well-deserved re-election as President of Brazil. Brazil and Ghana share a rich history, and I look forward to further strengthening our bilateral relations,” he wrote.
President Mahama added that the two countries would continue working together through the Accra Reset initiative to promote the interests of developing nations.
“Together, through the Accra Reset initiative, we will continue championing the Global South agenda for the betterment of our peoples,” he stated.
The congratulatory message followed Brazil’s presidential runoff election, in which Lula reportedly defeated his challenger, Flávio Bolsonaro, of the Liberal Party, to secure another term in office.
According to the results cited in the report, Lula obtained 51.79 per cent of the valid votes, representing 64,256,232 votes, while Bolsonaro secured 48.21 per cent, equivalent to 59,826,041 votes.
Lula’s reported victory would extend the political career of the 80-year-old leader, who returned to the presidency in 2023 after previously serving as Brazil’s president from 2003 to 2010.
President Mahama’s message underscores Ghana’s interest in strengthening diplomatic and economic cooperation with Brazil, particularly through initiatives aimed at amplifying the voice of the Global South in international affairs.
