Nigerian singer Ayra Starr has sparked a debate about money, financial responsibility and gender roles in relationships after revealing that she would control a man if she were richer than him.
The “Bloody Samaritan” hitmaker shared her views on financial differences between partners while speaking on an episode of the Wahala podcast.
Ayra Starr said that even if she were financially wealthier than her partner, she would still expect him to provide for her in the relationship.
She further disclosed that she would not reveal the full extent of her wealth to a man who earns less than she does.
“If I date a man who I am richer than, I will control him. But even if I am richer, he will still be providing, and I won’t let him know I have a lot of money,” she said.
Her comments have generated mixed reactions, with some people supporting her position that men should provide financially in relationships.
Others, however, have criticised the singer, particularly over her decision to conceal her financial position from a partner who may earn less than her.
The comments have subsequently fuelled conversations about financial transparency, power dynamics and traditional gender roles in modern relationships.
Ayra Starr, whose real name is Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, is one of Nigeria’s leading Afrobeats artistes and has gained international recognition through songs including “Bloody Samaritan.”
