The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, has disclosed that the devastating floods that swept through parts of the Greater Accra Region following Monday’s heavy rains displaced more than 38,800 people, with seven individuals still unaccounted for.
Presenting a statement to Parliament on Tuesday, June 30, the Minister said the floods affected 25 communities across 18 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), disrupting economic activities, damaging properties and forcing thousands of residents from their homes.
According to Mr. Muntaka, a total of 7,761 households, comprising 38,802 individuals, were displaced by the flooding.
He said the worst-hit assemblies included Ga East, Ledzokuku, Ayawaso Central, Ga Central, Ga West, Ablekuma North, Weija-Gbawe, Ga South, Adenta, Krowor, Okaikwei South, Okaikwei North, Tema West, Tema Metropolitan, La Dade-Kotopon, Kpone-Katamanso and Ningo-Prampram.
Providing a breakdown of the impact, the Minister revealed that Ga East recorded 2,000 displaced persons from 400 households, with six people reported missing and five deaths. Ledzokuku registered 1,200 displaced persons from 240 households and one fatality, while Ayawaso Central recorded 3,021 displaced persons from 605 households, one missing person, and three deaths.
He further stated that Ga Central recorded 1,811 displaced persons from 363 households, while Ga West registered 2,300 displaced persons from 460 households, with no deaths or missing persons reported in either assembly.
Other affected areas included Ablekuma North, where 651 people from 131 households were displaced; Weija-Gbawe, with 2,500 displaced persons from 500 households; Ga South, with 2,100 people from 420 households; Adenta, where 1,850 residents from 370 households were affected; Krowor, which recorded 6,500 displaced persons from 1,300 households; Okaikwei South, with 701 displaced persons from 141 households; and Okaikwei North, where 2,620 people from 524 households were displaced.
In Tema West, 3,450 residents from 690 households were displaced, with three fatalities recorded, while the Tema Metropolitan Assembly recorded 3,601 displaced persons from 721 households. La Dade-Kotopon recorded 2,020 displaced persons from 404 households, while Kpone-Katamanso registered 1,100 displaced persons from 220 households, with no deaths reported.
“When all the figures are put together, we have a total of 7,761 households displaced, affecting 38,802 individuals, with seven persons still missing as of this morning,” the Minister told Parliament.
Mr. Muntaka assured lawmakers that government agencies and emergency response institutions are continuing rescue, relief and recovery operations in flood-affected communities while assessments are ongoing to determine the full extent of the damage.
The latest update comes as authorities intensify efforts to provide humanitarian assistance and restore normalcy in communities severely impacted by the floods.
