The police have arrested the mother of a suspected highway robbery gang leader for allegedly hiding a gun believed to have been used in a robbery on the Nsawam stretch of the Accra-Kumasi N6 highway.
Four other suspects, including a 14-year-old boy, have also been arrested in connection with the robbery.
The incident occurred on August 18, 2026.
Five suspects arrested
The suspects include the alleged gang leader, identified by the police as Obotan, his biological mother, Isaka Nafse, who is accused of supplying weapons to the gang, Isaka Majid, and the 14-year-old boy.
The teenager is alleged to have acted as a lookout and alerted the gang during their operations.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno disclosed the arrests at a press briefing in Accra on Monday.
He said the gang leader’s mother was arrested after allegedly concealing a weapon used in the robbery at her residence.
According to the IGP, a search of the suspects’ residence led to the recovery of several weapons and other items suspected to be linked to the robbery.
Weapons and other items recovered
The items recovered included:
- A pump-action gun
- A double-barrel gun
- Three single-barrel guns
- Two AA cartridges
- A locally manufactured pistol
- Three cutlasses
- Two pairs of handcuffs
- Two jackknives
- A canister of pepper spray
- A metal bar
- An ammunition pouch
- A tactical vest
The police also recovered an unregistered Royal 125 motorbike from the residence.
Police pursue another suspect
IGP Yohuno said all the arrested suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting with investigations.
He added that the police are pursuing another suspect identified as Tanko as investigations into the robbery continue.
