The Member of Parliament for Ofoase/Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has condemned the arrest and detention of New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team member Dennis Miracles Aboagye, describing the government’s actions as a dangerous precedent that could undermine Ghana’s democratic principles and the rule of law.
In a post shared on X on Sunday, July 12, 2026, the former Minister for Works and Housing accused the government of using arrests and detention as a means of intimidating political opponents.
“The use of arrests and detention as a tool to intimidate political opponents by this government is just shocking,” Mr. Oppong Nkrumah wrote.
According to the Ofoase/Ayirebi MP, Mr. Aboagye, who was arrested by officers of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) upon his arrival at the Kotoka International Airport, posed no flight risk and could have been invited to assist with investigations instead of being detained.
He argued that the circumstances surrounding the arrest were unnecessary, insisting that Mr. Aboagye was readily available to cooperate with investigators.
“When a man is easily locatable, there is no reason for which you will arrest and detain him on a Saturday to be investigated the following week,” he stated.
Mr. Oppong Nkrumah further warned that such actions risk reversing the gains Ghana has made over the years in strengthening democratic governance, due process, and respect for the rule of law.
“The precedents being set by this government just undermine all the decades of progress we’ve made as a country on matters of rule of law,” he added.
The comments follow the arrest of Dennis Miracles Aboagye by EOCO officers, reportedly with the assistance of immigration officials, shortly after he arrived in Ghana on Sunday.
The New Patriotic Party has alleged that Mr. Aboagye’s lawyers and some senior party officials have been denied access to him. The party also claims that, as of the time of issuing its statement, no formal charges had been communicated against him.
EOCO has yet to publicly comment on the allegations regarding access to the detainee or disclose the reasons for Mr. Aboagye’s arrest.
The development has generated political debate, with calls from some quarters for transparency and adherence to due process as investigations continue.
