The Overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom, Ya-Na Abukari II, has passed away, marking the end of an era for one of Ghana’s most revered traditional institutions.
The death of the revered monarch was officially announced on Monday, July 13, by the Head of the Dagbon Kingmakers, Kuga Naa Adam Abdulai II, following the performance of customary rites at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi, the traditional seat of the Dagbon Kingdom.
In accordance with Dagbon customs and traditions, the announcement was preceded by the beating of the traditional talking drum and the observance of sacred rites, signalling the passing of the Ya-Na to the people of Dagbon and the nation at large.
Preparations are currently underway at the Gbewaa Palace for the burial of the late overlord, which will be conducted in line with the customs and traditions of the Dagbon Kingdom.
The passing of Ya-Na Abukari II is expected to usher in a period of mourning across the kingdom, with traditional authorities expected to announce funeral arrangements and subsequently initiate the customary processes leading to the selection and installation of a new Ya-Na after the completion of the funeral rites.
The late Ya-Na Abukari II was widely regarded as a respected traditional leader whose reign contributed to the preservation of Dagbon’s rich cultural heritage and the promotion of peace and unity within the kingdom.
As of the time of filing this report, the cause of his death has not been officially disclosed, and palace authorities are yet to provide further details.
The passing of the Dagbon Overlord is expected to attract condolences from government officials, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and well-wishers from across Ghana and beyond.
