The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has completed the replacement of a damaged transmission tower on the 161kV Tema–Achimota transmission line at Ashaiman.
The replacement work was carried out in two phases on August 16 and 23, 2026, and was completed at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday. The transmission line was subsequently energised and returned to service.
The tower was damaged after a tanker exploded while welding activities were being carried out beneath the transmission lines.
The incident has renewed concerns about the dangers associated with activities and encroachment within transmission line corridors, particularly GRIDCo’s Right-of-Way (RoW).
In response, GRIDCo is preparing to roll out a nationwide public education campaign to raise awareness about the importance of keeping its Right-of-Way clear and safe.
The campaign will be spearheaded by GRIDCo’s Land Management, Information Services and Corporate Communications teams, which will engage the public on the risks associated with encroachment and activities carried out under high-voltage transmission lines.
The initiative follows a one-month ultimatum issued by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Jinapor, for encroachers to vacate GRIDCo’s Right-of-Way.
GRIDCo has stressed that keeping the Right-of-Way clear is essential not only to protect critical transmission infrastructure but also to safeguard lives and prevent avoidable accidents.
