Suhum, Eastern Region — Two people have died and six others sustained injuries following a fatal road accident involving a DAF truck, a VW Sprinter bus and a tricycle at Dr. Marbel Junction on the Accra-Kumasi Highway.
The accident occurred on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, and required the intervention of the Suhum Municipal Fire Station, which rescued one of the victims trapped beneath the DAF truck.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), a distress call was received at 11:21 a.m., prompting the dispatch of a five-member crew led by STNOII Darkwah Fobi Prince at 11:22 a.m.
The crew arrived at the scene a minute later and found a serious collision involving the DAF truck, with registration number BF 1722E6, a VW Sprinter bus, ER 195-24, and a Pragia tricycle, registered M-25-AS 8071.
A search of the accident scene revealed that one victim was trapped underneath the DAF truck.
Firefighters immediately deployed specialised extrication equipment and successfully freed the trapped victim before transporting the person to Suhum Government Hospital for medical attention.
Brake failure suspected
Preliminary findings indicate that the DAF truck suffered a brake failure, causing its driver to lose control of the vehicle.
The truck subsequently crashed into the VW Sprinter bus, which then collided with the tricycle that was parked nearby.
The impact resulted in significant damage to all three vehicles and left several people injured.
The casualties comprised six people — five males and one female. Two of the victims, one male and one female, were reported dead following the crash.
The front sections of both the DAF truck and the VW Sprinter bus sustained partial damage, while the tricycle was completely destroyed in the collision.
The Ghana Police Service also attended the scene and assisted with the emergency response and management of the accident site.
After completing the rescue and recovery operation, the fire crew left the scene at 12:34 p.m. and returned to the station at 12:36 p.m.
Fire Service urges motorists to maintain vehicles
Following the incident, the Eastern Regional Fire Command urged motorists to ensure that their vehicles are regularly serviced and properly maintained, particularly critical components such as braking systems.
The Command also appealed to drivers to exercise maximum caution when using the country’s highways to help reduce road crashes and prevent avoidable loss of lives.
The accident adds to concerns over road safety and the need for motorists to conduct regular checks on their vehicles before embarking on journeys.
