The Ghana Navy has intercepted a canoe carrying 59 sacks of suspected marijuana during an intelligence-led anti-narcotics operation at the Ada Estuary.
According to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), the operation was conducted by the Navy’s Riverine Command at about 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 19, 2026, after personnel detected a canoe attempting to cross the estuary into the open sea.
The occupants of the canoe abandoned the vessel and fled by swimming away after spotting the naval patrol team.
A search of the canoe led to the discovery of 59 sacks of suspected marijuana, 24 containers of 25-litre fuel, two 40-horsepower outboard motors, a Tecno mobile phone, and a voter’s identification card.
The seized items have since been handed over to the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) for further investigation.
The Ghana Armed Forces said efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend the suspects who escaped during the operation.
The Ghana Navy reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s maritime domain and preventing criminal syndicates from using the country’s inland waterways and coastal areas for illicit activities.
