Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has announced that the government will construct 50,000 housing units for teachers across the country as part of efforts to improve accommodation and boost teacher retention, particularly in rural communities.
According to the Minister, the initiative, known as the Teacher Dabre Initiative, is aimed at providing decent housing for teachers while addressing accommodation challenges in underserved areas.
Speaking at the Government’s Accountability Series on Monday, July 20, Mr. Iddrisu said the project would be implemented through a decentralised approach, with the District Assemblies Common Fund overseeing construction at the regional and district levels.
“We intend to construct 50,000 housing units for teachers across the country. The project will be led by the District Assemblies Common Fund because we want to decentralise its implementation at the regional and district levels,” he said.
The Minister said the Ministry of Education would provide additional support to facilitate the implementation of the project, including leveraging resources from the Ghana Secondary School Pension (GSOP) Fund as collateral support.
Mr. Iddrisu also disclosed that the government was close to finalising arrangements to introduce a 20 per cent allowance for teachers who voluntarily accept postings to rural communities.
“Apart from the 20 per cent allowance for teachers who voluntarily accept postings to rural areas, we are almost through,” he stated.
The proposed housing project forms part of the government’s broader efforts to improve teacher welfare, address accommodation challenges, and make rural postings more attractive to educators.
